The Institute of Fundamental Problems of Biology of the RAS is a continuer
and a successor of the scientific schools of A.N.Terenin, A.A.Krasnovskiy,
V.B.Evstigneyev, E.V.Kondratieva, A.A.Nichiporovich and the Institute
of Photosynthesis of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, that was founded
in 1966 (its Director was V.B.Evstigneyev).

Major research areas of the IFPB/RAS are associated
with investigations of photosynthesis processes in plants and microorganisms,
and also biotechnology and ecology.
- Study of molecular mechanisms of biological processes of the transformation
of energy. Study of transformation and accumulating of energy during
photosynthesis. Study of structure and function of membranes and hypomolecular
complexes, which participate in biological transformation of energy
and metabolites. Photobiotechnology.
- Investigation of molecular mechanisms of expression of genetic information.
Study of formation processes of functionally active proteins. Study
of regulation of biochemical processes. Study of influence of physical
factors on biological systems. Study of bio-receptors.
- Investigation of physico-chemical problems of stability of ecosystems.
Biogeochemical exploring of the environment and monitoring of its components.
Study of eco-physiological and bio-chemical problems of adaptation of
ecosystems under the conditions of anthropogenous influence.

| MUSEUMS and FONDS in the Institute |
- Soil Ecological Museum. The Museum carries out educational activity
and popularizes ecological and environment-protecting knowledge in the
town and the region.
- Ecological Fond of the basin of the Oka river. The main function
of the Fond is monitoring of the waters of the Oka basin.
- Museum of mutant strains of micro-water-plants. The Museum numbers
over 200 strains (Sector of Photosynthesis genetics).
- Collection of free-living and symbiotic eucaryotic and procaryotic
phototrophic microorganisms (Laboratory of biochemistry and Biotechnology
of Phototrophic Microorganisms).

| Educational and Scientific Activity of the Institute |
|
Educational and Scientific Centre on Fundamental Problems
of Biology is functioning in the Institute. The Centre provides qualified
carrying out of scientific investigations and teaching activity, according
to contracts with higher educational institutions.
Educational Centre of the IFPB/RAS includes the following forms of training
for undergraduate and master students:
- accomplishing in the laboratories of the Institute of course, diploma
and master papers by students of higher educational institutions of
Russia.
Postgraduate training:
- probation work;
- competition for the Ph. D. degree;
- working for the Dr. Sc. degree.

The Most Prominent
Accomplishments in the Institute for the Past 10 years: |

- It has been showed, that pigments of chlorophyllous nature in the
reaction centres of photosynthesizing bacteria can be replaced by plant
analogs, and the main function of photo-division of charges, which assures
the inflow of luminous energy into the biosphere, is preserved.
- With the use of pheophytin-substituted bacterial reaction centres,
it has been revealed, that the very primary act of transformation of
the luminous energy during photosynthesis within 1.6 picoseconds results
in the formation of a positive charge on the dimer and a negative charge
on the monomer of the bacterio-chlorophyll.
- For the first time registration of spectra of electron paramagnetic
resonance (EPR) of the primary radical pair, the first relatively stable
product of photo-transfer of an electron in reaction centres of photosynthesizing
bacteria, has been accomplished.
- Heterogeneity of antennal bacterial complexes has been determined
by carotenoid composition in the cells with reduced contents of these
pigments. A new unique type of photo-accumulating bacterial complex,
with three forms of bacterio-chlorophyll in the nearest infrared area,
has been isolated.
- It has been showed, that bicarbonate ions are necessary for functioning
of the system of photosynthetic oxidation of water in higher plants.
This system provides inflow of the great bulk of oxygen into the atmosphere
of the Earth.
- Fundamental principles of ecological rating of anthropogenous influence
on natural ecosystems have been worked out. Such rating is necessary
for estimation of limits of stable functioning of the Russian landscapes.
Some workers of the Institute were awarded to two State Prizes and one
International Prize. During recent years, the Russian Federation Government
Prize, 41 home and foreign grants, 6 grants from the Ministry of Science
and Technologies and the Ministry of Ecology were received.
Presence of highly qualified research personnel (19 researchers
with the Dr. Sc. degree, 68 researchers with the Ph. D. degree), and
also modern theoretic and experimental methods, allows the Institute
to solve fundamental problems of biology successfully, on the level
meeting highest world standards.
The Institute co-operates with over 20 home and foreign organizations
in England, the USA, China, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, France,
Germany, Canada, Japan and Holland.
