| Major Research Areas
of the Institute |
| |
|
The major research areas of the Institute of Physicochemical
and Biological Problems of Soil Science are connected with studies of
physicochemical and biological processes in soil and ╥ the space-temporal
organization of soil.
The main problems:
- physical-chemical processes of soil genesis and of transformation
of natural and exogenous chemical matters in soil and ecosystems;
- the role of soil at the biogeochemical cycles of biophilous, lithophilous
and technogenous elements;
- the significance of the cryosphere for the global circulation of
matter and energy, and for the preservation of genetic resources;
- the space-temporal organization and functioning of soil at the biosphere
as the basis of stady development;
- mathematical modelling of soil processes and ecosystems.

| The Most Prominent Accomplishments
in the Institute |
| |
- A number of the accomplishments of the researchers of the Institute
have won the recognition. They are: the studies of biological and abiogenic
mechanisms of transformation of compounds of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus,
heavy metals in soils; the role of soil in fixation or emission of the
carbonic acid; molecular mechanisms of the formation of compounds of
humus and examining of the structure of these compounds.
- Theoretical approaches and models for description of migration of
salts in soils have been developed. Comparative analysis of transformation
processes of soil contents and structure during about last 20000-30000
years has been carried out. The analysis was made with the Soil-archaeological
method, which had been put forward in the Institute. The conception
of the role of the permafrost soils as a depository of enormous reserves
of hothouse gases and living microbe cells during thousands and millions
of years for the understanding of the life development history on the
Earth, has been formulated. Transformation of a number of anthropogenic
organic compounds in soils, including pesticides and products of their
degradation, has been studied. Methods of observation of migration and
accumulation of toxic compounds in soils and surface waters have been
created.
- Recommendations for environmental friendly use of fertilizers, detoxication
of soils, thermal melioration, ecological estimation of the state of
the topsoil have been developed. Among applied research works, the investigations
of the large research group headed by V. A. Kovda should be mentioned.
These works helped to stop the project of territorial redistribution
of flowing of Siberian rivers to the Middle Asia.
The works of the researchers of the Institute were
awarded by the State Prize (1988), The Russian Federation Government Prize
(1996), Academician D. N. Pryanishnikov Prize of the Academy of Sciences
(1997).
